Traffic Management Systems

The fast lane

If such a thing existed as a gold medal for the bus lane in the London 2012 Olympics, Ultra CIS would have taken it.

London Transport for London (TfL) maintains 580 of main roads and all of London’s traffic lights. London Buses – part of TfL – manages the bus network, which is one of the largest in the world with a fleet of more than 8,500 buses.

Even with an already effective network, the London 2012 Olymipic Games proposed a challenge. With over five million people forecasted to descend upon London along with planned road closures and bus diversions, traffic needed to be optimised to avoid the chaos which consumed the Atlanta Olympics.

Ultra CIS worked with a leading global supplier of comprehensive, reliable solutions for vehicle location and control technology, to prioritise traffic signals in favour of the bus fleet; alleviating congestion and reducing late arrivals.

Ultra CIS designed and manufactured an integrated radio solution with 17,000 custom-developed units, which passed information from moving buses to traffic lights and enabled them to gain priority over other road users.  Ultra’s solution ultimately helped to ease congestion and improve traffic flow; a key factor in the overall success of the London 2012 Olympics.
